I'm happy I ordered the kickstand with our tiller. With it you don't have to lay the tiller down in the dirt when not in use and it holds it upright stored in the garage.

Just like a bicycle kickstand, the Mantis kick stand lets you park your Mantis Tiller anywhere. It helps stabilize the tiller while you start up the engine, or fill the gas tank. The kick stand flips up when tiller is in use and then down to allow the tiller to stand alone. Made with durable solid steel construction, it attaches easily to the base of the tiller handles on any Mantis tiller/cultivator.

Troy-Bilt Bronco 208cc 4-Cycle Gas Powered Rear Bolo Tine Tiller Review

Troy-Bilt Bronco 208cc 4-Cycle Gas Powered Rear Bolo Tine Tiller
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My husband and I searched everywhere for a small rear tine tiller that I could handle better than the "huge" one we had. After researching and listening to salesmen, we chose this one. (He was very skeptical because he thinks bigger is better.) Anyway, after the garden dried out from the rains, he tried out the new Bronco. He complained to me that he had to push it through the garden. I just thought he was saying that because he wanted a larger one. (Keep in mind, our garden has been worked about 10 years and is now a mixture of lots of clay, and little topsoil, so it is still "thick" and hard.) I finally got to try the tiller out, and on the first pass, through the edge of the garden that had not been tilled as much, it went great. Once I got into the garden that had been worked over the previous years, I had to push the tiller. I also had to lift it up to keep it from getting stuck in the dirt. It would till down, but the tires are not big enough to pull it. Guess where it is now? Back at Lowe's. They were great holding to their guarantee that if it wasn't what we expected, we could return in within a certain time period. Now, we are on for a tiller with larger tires.
Faults for a female user: hard to transport unless you park it right next to where you use it, also have to move the tires to make them either pull when cranked only or move them again so you can push the tiller when it is not cranked, have to push it through a well "seasoned" garden and it is hard to do that, also have to hold up the handle to keep the tines from getting stuck
Pluses: cranks easy, fairly light-weight (but cannot use it one handed like on the commercials)

Troy-Bilt Super Bronco 16-Inch 208cc 4-Cycle OHV Gas-Powered CRT Garden Tiller
Average Reviews:

I was in the market for a small garden tiller since our garden is only about 20 x 20 feet. I started doing some research on the internet and read many reviews about the Super Bronco. Some reviews lead me to believe that this little tiller was a beast that would drag the unsuspecting gardener down the garden screaming. Others were stunned when the little tiller wouldn't drag itself through half a foot of loose dirt because it didn't have enough traction. Even others were very concerned that the little tiller wasn't very good quality when compared to Troy built tillers of earlier years.
Well, I went ahead and bought one anyway, and may I say, this little tiller is what it is. No, it doesn't buck out of control and take you for a ride, but does it jump a little when it hits a hard rock or stick? Sure it does, just like any other tiller (it ain't a lawn mower). Will it propel itself through a half a foot of well tilled dirt? Nope, not without lifting a little on the handle, just like any other tiller. Is it as high a quality as the Troy Built tiller my dad used on his huge garden from about 1980 to 2000? Nope, but then that tiller was twice as big as the little Bronco. That one would compare to the Troy Built Big Red Garden Tiller that sells for $2599.99, not the roughly 700 bucks you pick up the Super Bronco at Lowes for.
For what it is, this is a nice little tiller. My dad gave his big Troy Built tiller of yester year to my sister and it is still going. He replaced it with a very expensive BCS tiller, and it works great. I tilled his garden last year for him as he is getting rather old (82 this year), and, believe it or not, that $3000 tiller was better than my $700 Bronco tiller. Go figure. But I tilled my garden this last week with the Troy Built Super Bronco, and it did great. Tilling soil is going to be a bit of a workout no matter what tiller you use. It wasn't a whole lot different than using the BCS, just a bit lighter. The BCS tiller will buck when it hits rocks, and it will not pull itself through my dad's mature soil without lifting up a little on the handle. I do wish the handles on the Bronco were a little stouter, and only time will tell if they really need to be. The little Bronco sure is a lot easier to turn around at the end of a row than that BCS or my dad's old Troy Built.
For a large garden, get the Troy Built Big Red or a BCS, but for a small garden, and for the price, the little Bronco is a sweet tiller.

Troy-Bilt GC720R Trimmer Plus Adjustable Garden Cultivator/Tiller Attachment Review

Troy-Bilt GC720R Trimmer Plus Adjustable Garden Cultivator/Tiller Attachment
Average Reviews:

I never thought that a small tiller attachment for a weed trimmer could hold up to my expectations, but I was definitely not disappointed with this unit.
I was amazed at how much I could do with this cultivator. Entire flower beds and even large planters can be worked without the effort of hand-tilling, and the compact size of this attachment allows it to get into corners a full-size tiller couldn't go.
There is plenty of torque to go through pretty compacted soil. Large, solid chunks of clay or stone will get stuck, but a little patience and common sense on the part of the operator will prevent that problem.
Well worth the money, definitely a must-have attachment for the Ryobi trimmer!

Troy-Bilt Horse 21A-682P766 12-Inch 305cc Briggs and Stratton 1450 Series Horse Forward Rotating Rear Tine Tiller
Average Reviews:

The Troy-Bilt Horse more than lives up to its name. I used it to till my garden and get it ready for planting, very easy, just turned it to powder. Much easier than my old Troy-Bilt Pony could do it. I also did some tilling for for my neighbor. Broke new ground for them. I did it 3 inches at a time and it just chewed it up! I kept adding 3 inches until I was 12 inches down. This tiller has the weight and power to do most of the work for you. It is a large machine and is alot to handle.
The one thing I do not like is the kill switch. Each handle has a squeeze switch, only one needs to be squeezed to keep the tiller running. Hence my problem, the tiller does not need a kill switch, only a switch that stops the forward momentum and tines from spinning, like my pony has. The shifter is tight on my horse and can be difficult to get back to neutral. In neutral or reverse you do not need to hold the kill switch to keep the tiller running. The tiller has 2 forward speeds, fast and slow. That shifter needs to have 3 notches, fast, free wheel and slow, so it would be easier to find those 3 spots with that shift lever. It is very easy to start, has always started on the first pull for me. There is room for improvement with the shifting levers and the kill switch, but the Horse Tiller just chews up ground better than any tiller I have ever seen or used in 34 years of gardening.
I would recommend this Tiller to anyone who has more than 1000 sq feet of garden, or has hard clay like I do. My garden is over 2400 sq feet and hard clay so it is perfect for me. The Horse would be hard to use in a small garden even if you have hard clay. If you are tired of rototiller rodeo and being drug around by a tiller that can not dig in and do the hard work, then the Horse is for you.

Sun Joe TJ601E Tiller Joe 9-Amp Electric Garden Tiller/Cultivator Review

Sun Joe TJ601E Tiller Joe 9-Amp Electric Garden Tiller/Cultivator
Average Reviews:

Before I bought this tiller, I went to several brick and mortar stores such as Lowe's and Home Depot to look at electric tillers. I was specifically looking for electric tillers, because I do not want the hassle of working with gasoline. Compared to the tillers in those stores, and even the tillers on Amazon, this tiller has the best bang for your buck.
PROs: 1. Very wide tilling width. I used to have a Ryobi tiller whose tilling width was 1/2 to 2/3 of the tilling width of this tiller. Width does matter! I was able to complete a tilling job over the weekend in much less time with this tiller.
2. High tine clearance means any rocks in the soil do not get stuck as easily. My Ryobi tiller had very low clearance, which meant that every few minutes a rock would get stuck in the tines, and all work would stop. Not so with this tiller. It just spits the rocks out.
3. Electric- may be a pro or con depending on how you look at it.
4. Powerful- this tiller made easy work of tilling through crabgrass. I didn't even have to remove the grass before I started tilling.
CONs:
1. Tilling depth is only 7 inches, which is not all that great, but I knew this when I bought the tiller
Summary: All in all, this is a great tiller for your money! If this thing breaks down some years from now, I would not hesitate to get it all over again!

This is a good powerful tiller, but if you use it to do any serious gardening, the brushes in the motor will 'burn up' and need replacing. Use for no more than 10 minutes at a time, and let it cool off for at least a half hour (in the shade) before you use it again. I have two that 'burned up' after four months of use. I am hoping I can replace the brushes myself for less than what it would cost to return it under Mantis's one year guarantee (which I suspect they will be retracting in the future).

You'll be ready to garden all year round with the Mantis 7250-00-02 Three-Speed Electric Tiller/Cultivator. With a powerful, environmentally friendly engine, durable tines, and compact profile, the Mantis Electric Tiller/Cultivator is ideal for creating new gardens, tilling in narrow rows and raised beds, or along fences. Whether you're a first-time gardener breaking through new ground or a veteran green thumb, the Mantis Electric Tiller/Cultivator will help you maintain a bountiful garden for years to come.
Powerful but Easy to ControlDon't be fooled by the small, compact design of the Mantis Electric Tiller/Cultivator. Though it weighs a mere 21 pounds and has a width of only nine inches, the Mantis is powerful, thanks to its three-speed electric motor.
A reliable push-button primer will get you started, but the tines won't move until you squeeze the throttle. Once you've activated the throttle, the patented serpentine tines spin at up to 240 RPM to break through sod--even hard clay--tilling down to a depth of 10 inches.
The Mantis Electric Tiller/Cultivator makes it easy to maintain your garden. Simply reverse the tines to shallow-cultivate depths of up to three inches--it's much faster than using hand tools. And because it tills a nine-inch-wide path, this tool is especially useful in tight spaces and hard-to-reach areas. That's a real advantage for raised-bed gardeners.
Convenient, Versatile, and DurableThe Mantis Electric Tiller/Cultivator features folding handle bars which make it convenient to store in a garage or tool shed.
And with optional attachments (sold separately), the Mantis Electric Tiller/Cultivator can be used beyond the confines of your garden. Its lightweight design and convenient carrying handle make it portable, so adding an accessory such as a border edger or lawn aerator could potentially keep you busy all summer and into the fall.
The Mantis Electric Tiller/Cultivator's durable one-piece cast gear box is designed to last. Additionally, the tines are guaranteed against breakage for the lifetime of the tool.

For the small price and power, I didn't have any great expectations. Was I surprized? After years of using a garden weasel to cullivate and weed a medium size garden may back and patiences were dwindling. This product finished that back breaking job in just over a hour. I was actually looking for more places to cultivate. It brought back the fun in gardening. Some areas of my garden were pretty packed, but this guy dug down and loosened everything up in fine fashion. The battery charge lasted about as long a I wanted to work before taking a quick breather. The recharge is quick, getting it back up to full speed in less than 30 minutes. Just make sure you use it with the intended purchase; culivate, aerate, & weed. Beware of large tree roots.
I would say this is a Garden Weasel on steriods.

This is a great product for tilling between plants and other areas where I can't use my larger mechanical tiller. It pushes into the soil easily and twists back and forth with light to moderate effort. The bar just above the tines is very useful for helping to push them into the ground by stepping on it. I have used the tiller for a few hours in a day and although there is some work involved my arms didn't end up sore nor did I get especially tired from it. I am very satisfied with this tool.

A fairly lightweight unit that has a lot of power. You'll get about 45 mins to an hour of use from a single charge. My wife was able to till her three 4ft x 10ft raised vegetable beds that had been idle over the winter in two charges. It has the balance and feel of using a weed wacker. The Lithium battery is small and compact, hence the average run time. This of course makes the unit lighter.
Minimal assembly was required, requiring just a couple of minutes of time.

Hi- I'm not sure what issues the others have had with this machine, but it's awesome. I've been using the one I bought new for about 3 years now at my home and honestly it's been worked hard and a little abused... but it works as well as brand new. I use it to clear raw land by helping dig out roots, to help grade soil, to make new garden space, etc. My neighbor has seen the results & asked me where I got it. The only negative I can see is the lack of available attachments- I'd like to see an aerator, edger & dethatching attachment for it.

I have owned a Mantis Tiller for ten years and it is worn out, so I took a chance and bought the Greenworks 27012 as I could not find any reviews. Happy to say I am very pleased, the price and tilling are great. The power of the electric tiller is stronger than my 2 cycle Mantis, and the tines remove very easy.
I have raised beds and the electric tiller was heavier than my Mantis but still easy to use. I am not used to the wheels so that may take some time to get used to. The cord holder needs some improvement, didn't hold my cord very well but that was minor for me.
It is worth a try, I am very happy, recommend it. I don't know if it will last ten years or not but time will tell.

This machine is a real workhorse. I just tilled an area of hard pan (very hard) and roots. Without the drag bar all the way down, there would be no way I could control it in the roots. The model I received looks slightly different than the picture. My reverse is controlled by a handlebar lever the same as the tine control and the drag bar is the heavy bar stock not the puny pipe as pictured. Choke, speed and fuel shutoff controls are easy to get to and it is a one pull to start. Now the bad part. The packaging is atrocious. It is loosely cable tied to a small pallet inside a cardboard somewhat reinforced box. There were explicit handling instructions on the box that the shipping company didn't pay much attention to. It was a sad looking sight sitting in my driveway with the handlebars poking through the box. I would have refused delivery if I had of been home. Amazon came through for me in and I am a happy customer.

Mantis 7225-00-02 2-Cycle Gas-Powered Tiller/Cultivator (CARB Compliant)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my twelfth season for using this tiller. To prepare my garden I use an ancient Troy built that has been going strong for about 18 years now (I bought it used) and it looks as if this Mantis two stroke is going to last just as long. To be honest, I am a rather lazy gardener and the job of all jobs I hate most is cultivating and weeding. This little machine has taken away almost all of the excuses I have for not having a neat, well tended garden. There are a couple of things you should know though before purchasing this little gem:
First, this is not a machine that is suitable for breaking up new ground or ground that has not been tilled for several years. It simply is not built for that.
Secondly, you should not let your mind wonder when using this cultivator. It can take out a garden plant in a flash if you loose control over it and indeed, if you are extremely inattentive, it certainly has the capability of taking off a toe or two.
Thirdly: I would strongly recommend you use gloves when using this for any extended period of time. They give you protection of course, but they also allow for a better grip, ergo, more control.
Forth: Try to avoid running in through bailing twine, wire or even vines if possible. Getting the stuff untangled is truly a odious task.
Fifth: Perform the preventive maintenance on it as recommended and then double the timing on it. Keep the tines sharp and keep them replaced as needed. (Yes, the tines are guaranteed against breakage, but I promise you that they will bend if bounced off enough rocks...hey, I live in the Ozarks, rocks I know!)
Sixth: Watch out for larger rocks. Not only can the bend tines, but they can cause the machine to go out of control.
Seventh: Watch and take great care with your gas/oil mix and at the end of the season follow the directions as to winter storage.
Now that being said, this thing is a snap to use. As a matter of fact it can easily be handled by a knowledgably and trained child with very little supervision. It can go into places a larger tiller cannot possibly go. It is light and is very easy to maneuver once you get the hang of it. Now I admit that I am a complete and absolute klutz when it comes to fixing anything mechanical (well, truth be told, non-mechanical things too), but I have had to take this into the shop only once in the years I have owned and used it. Everything else I was able to fix myself using only the manual provided, and over the past couple of years a few sites on my computer. No fancy tools are needed; only the ability to read and a smudge of common sense. Hey, trust me, if I can do it, then just about anyone can. I mean we are talking here about someone so inept that my wife use to have to put the children's Christmas toys together as I could not manage it.
I am like another reviewer here. I doubt if I would still be gardening, vegetable and flowers, if I did not have this cultivator. If and when it finally goes belly up (which will probably be long after I go first), I plan to purchase another. I do wish I could give this one more than five stars.

Pros:
Lightweight, you can just pick it up and pack it around instead of dragging it
POWERFUL! I wasn't expecting it at all and had a very relaxed grip when I first turned it on, it almost zoomed out of my hands.
Easy Assembly, 2 screws and two bolts with wingnuts, then you just "press in" the cord a couple places where required.
about double the tine span the mantis tillers have, at less than half the price.
Cons:
Maybe a little too light weight, it didn't till very deep while walking a steady slow pace.
As for the fact that it doesn't till very deep, I believe just re-tilling the area would do the job, which I would have done today but was in a hurry to get my strawberry plants in the ground before they died. I tilled a 10x10 patch of packed down soil, in under 10 minutes with no signs of overheating, so really, it's not a bad machine for people with small to medium gardens (like me!) but I wouldn't recommend it for a large garden.
I was actually going to buy a Mantis tiller too, had the order form filled out and the check ready to go in the mail when I found this Sun Joe tiller, and was nervous to try it, because of the fact that there were no user reviews on any of the sites I researched them on, but decided to take the chance and save a lot of money. No regrets. Keep in mind too, this tiller only costs about as much as it would to rent one for 3 days, not a bad investment.
EDIT: Day Two of tiller use and I like it even more, I started tilling my future vegie patch this morning and worked out the machine's quirks, first off, hold it back, and follow it very slowly, second, definitely retill the soil after the first tilling, it really digs in and tills well the second time, The only thing that stopped me today was when a bunch of synthetic twine that was buried in our back yard completely wrapped up the tines and had to be cut out, the machine stopped itself. After removing the twine I started it up and there had been no damage.
EDIT2: Used the tiller again, and have upgraded my rating from 4 stars to 5. While tilling, a massive chunk of buried concrete about 8x8 inches, by 2.5 inches thick became jammed in between the tines and the motor, and I do mean jammed, the tines had literally dug into the concrete about half an inch. The motor stopped itself, and after 20 minutes of pounding on the concrete from different angles with a mallet it finally wrenched free, I assumed it would be destroyed but the tines hadn't even been bent, I plugged it in and started up without a hitch, used it for another half an hour. SO impressed!

Troy-Bilt TB154 9-Inch 6.5 Amp Electric Garden Cultivator/Tiller Review

I bought this machine last year with the money from my government stimulus check. Technically, it is called a cultivator, not a tiller, so I didn't know what to expect out of it power-wise. I was intent on putting in a decent-sized garden, but the only place in my yard that was getting good sun was also the spot where my lawn grew the thickest. I mowed the lawn and then went to work on it with the cultivator. With the narrow width, it naturally took me a good bit of time to till up approximately 16' x 32' plot of thick lawn, but I took my time and this machine did it in a day. I gave it a second tilling at a cross angle. I did have some grass come back in the garden, but this year I don't expect any of it to still be there.
With the success I had on the garden spot, I went ahead and dug up huge stretches of my yard and built planters. These spots equaled the size of the garden spot. Then, in about three stages, I gradually tilled up my entire back yard (where grass would no longer grow due to shade) and planted it all in clover. This year I added more garden space by tilling up another chunk of lawn approximately 8' x 32'. I have tilled it twice, but will hit it one more time to make sure I've gotten all the grass killed this year. I've also-re-tilled last years garden area which I had over-wintered in clover.
One thing that had concerned me was the instructions to remove the tines after each use and clean them. This turned out to be an extremely easy task, as they are held in place with ring pins and slide right off the axle. The tines are extremely tough on this machine. I've jammed large rocks in them and also bounced it off the edge of my concrete driveway. It just keeps chugging away with a minimum of care. Troy-Bilt makes a more expensive gas model, but I looked at them in the store and the tines appear to be exactly the same. This model is quiet and you never have to mess with oil and gas. Get a heavy-duty extension cord (or two)--the heavier the gauge the better to get full power to the machine.
