Fiskars 7991 Rotary Cultivator Review

(More customer reviews)The build quality of this cultivator is pretty good, with the metal shaft of other Fiskars products. It is easy to wield, and the tines move quickly and smoothly. The length is a compromise between something you can use when kneeling down in the bed and something you can use while standing up, although when I do so I need to bend over a fair amount. I wish it was about a foot or two longer.

(More customer reviews)I bought this thinking it would be great for my garden, but the rotating blades are not sharp at all and it barely pulls up any of the weeds. I wouldn't get this if your trying to keep the weeds down in your garden, better to use a hoe. It might be ok for prepping the soil before planting, making some rows with two blades on the outside, or keep weeded soil around your garden turned up. But, for removing weeds it kind of rolls right over them and you keep having to go over the same spot many many times and still not a good result.

I like how it is made of steel instead of plastic, and it is very versitile, by being able to remove blades, it can be customized to the need at hand. It comes with a very short handle, very usefull if you are on the ground, but if you want to stand up, and use this you are going to need another longer handle. I used a simple wooden broom handle.

Earthway Tubular Steel High Wheel Cultivator 6500 Review

(More customer reviews)We brought an Earthway high wheel garden cultivator to a family member in Ireland who has a large organic vegetable garden. It works amazingly well. We have only used the five-prong cultivator to weed between the crop rows in pretty heavy clay soil, and have yet to try the other attachments. It requires only the technique of using a manual push mower: one step forward at a time; a shallow pass the first time and a deeper pass the second; going down the grade rather than up it; and so on. We are so impressed with it that we've just ordered one for our home garden and allotment in California. It makes weeding a pleasure and saves our backs.
September 2, 2007 follow-up. We did not have such good luck with our second cultivator. It arrived packaged in the original Earthway box, but it was missing two vital parts and the parts that were sent were painted black, not the usual powdered steel finish. We called Earthway, which promptly sent the two parts and had no explanation why the hoe was now painted black. I asked them to make sure that the missing parts were black as well. The two parts arrived painted gray, so we have a 2-tone hoe. Additionally, the main tool, the 5-clawed cultivator, had too much solder on one of its two parts, so they did not fit together smoothly, with the result that our hoe is somewhat lopsided when it is standing up. It still works well, but its appearance and lopsidedness take away some of the pleasure of using it. We emailed Earthway about it, but never received a response.

I couldn't believe I wouldn't get some usefulness from my newly purchased Hound Dog auger, as the areas i wished to plant are recently tilled and planted (I am putting in end-of-summer replacement color), and found this auger stalled out before cutting through hair-fine roots near the surface. Arrrrgh. The wrenching of my wrist when the auger froze my 18v drill was worse then if I had dug the hole by hand. I tried different speeds, and practiced in different soils around the garden to no good effect. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS ITEM!!!!! I wish I'd read the previous review before my purchase, and can only OSH will reimburse me when they see the length of the register tape upon which this item was purchasedl

(More customer reviews)I like the looks of this tool. It's comfortable, and the handle lets you get a lot of leverage. It's nice in loose garden soil, but it's not sturdy enough for compacted soil. I bent mine soon after I started using it on the dandelions in my lawn.
UPDATE: I made use of the warranty and got a new one. I've been more careful with it and it's performing well. I'd give it a couple more stars now, but I can't seem to change that part of my review.

(More customer reviews)This is a handy tool for cultivating small areas, but it is not appropriate for anything more than a medium sized flowerbed. The handles work well to gain leverage, but you will feel it in your muscles if you attempt to do too large an area!
The fact that it isn't powered lets you get into areas you wouldn't want to go with even the smallest of tillers, and it does a great job of breaking up the ground to a depth of a couple of inches, which is perfect for flowers.
For larger projects, use a mini-tiller, and use this tool for the detail work and the smaller beds. Both tools are a good combination to have at your disposal.
