I couldn't believe I wouldn't get some usefulness from my newly purchased Hound Dog auger, as the areas i wished to plant are recently tilled and planted (I am putting in end-of-summer replacement color), and found this auger stalled out before cutting through hair-fine roots near the surface. Arrrrgh. The wrenching of my wrist when the auger froze my 18v drill was worse then if I had dug the hole by hand. I tried different speeds, and practiced in different soils around the garden to no good effect. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS ITEM!!!!! I wish I'd read the previous review before my purchase, and can only OSH will reimburse me when they see the length of the register tape upon which this item was purchasedl

The 3 long tines can be easily driven into the soil at the base of the offending plant; the long handle provides leverage to rip it out. Then, when you've got a pile of debris, the tines provide a handy rake to clean it all up.
I've used it on big clumps of perennial grasses, on patches of Bermuda grass, on invading blackberries, on French broom, and lots of other things.
The mattock end is well-sharpened, great for precision whacking of things like dandelion, Picris, dock and other small weeds.

(More customer reviews)I couldn't decide between the Black and Decker cultivator and this one... I actually needed two... one for me and one for my "hired hand. This, too, was "perfect tool for those of you who need to weed/ cultivate small tight areas of the garden and spare the bending over that so often causes back pain. A great product at a great price... with great results. You can't go wrong with either, but if you pressed me into choosing one, I think I liked the Black and Decker better for being a bit more ergonomic and overall design.

(More customer reviews)This is a great product for tilling between plants and other areas where I can't use my larger mechanical tiller. It pushes into the soil easily and twists back and forth with light to moderate effort. The bar just above the tines is very useful for helping to push them into the ground by stepping on it. I have used the tiller for a few hours in a day and although there is some work involved my arms didn't end up sore nor did I get especially tired from it. I am very satisfied with this tool.
